Job Summary
The Chief Engineer leads the engineering and maintenance department to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all building systems. This role acts as a primary liaison between ownership, management, and outside contractors for all facility maintenance, capital improvements, and regulatory compliance initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Property Maintenance & Upkeep: Oversee the repair and maintenance of guest rooms, public areas, kitchens, and building exteriors.
- System Management: Ensure optimal performance of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, and boiler systems.
- Preventative Maintenance: Develop and implement comprehensive preventative maintenance (PM) schedules for all equipment and facilities to prevent downtime.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure all fire-safety, sprinkler, and emergency systems are fully operational. Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal building codes, including OSHA and health regulations.
- Team Leadership: Hire, train, schedule, and supervise maintenance staff. Foster a culture of safety and exceptional guest service.
- Financial Management: Develop and manage the departmental operating budget. Negotiate with vendors and manage contracts for specialized services like elevator maintenance or landscaping.
- Emergency Response: Lead the response to facility emergencies, such as power outages or mechanical failures, and remain available for on-call duties.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in hotel engineering or facilities management, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
- Technical Proficiency: Strong hands-on knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. Proficiency with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) is highly desired.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50–100 lbs and stand or walk for extended periods.
- Interpersonal: Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to communicate technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.
Education
- High school diploma or GED required; technical school certification or an associate's degree in building maintenance or engineering is preferred.
