Job Description

The Assistant Controller is responsible for assisting in the management of the hotel’s finance function including budgeting, financial reporting, maintenance of balance sheet accounts, internal control systems and related aspects of hotel operations. Together with the Controller, the Assistant Controller is responsible for ensuring that all financial transactions are properly recorded, for ensuring that an adequate system of internal financial controls is in place, and for maintaining the hotel's general ledger and preparing financial reports in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.


  • Assist the Controller 
  • Supervise, direct and train (as applicable) the accounting department staff 
  • Interface with the GM, Assistant GM and various department heads as it relates to accounting and financial matters 
  • Interface with owners and or owner representatives as it relates to financial matters 
  • Interface with the outside accounting firm 
  • Ensure that all company employees (accounting as well as other departments) are entering information into applications used by the accounting department in a manner so as to eliminate unnecessary adjustments by the accounting department 
  • Attend daily ops meeting

Responsible directly and/or indirectly for: 

  • Formal closing of the books on a monthly basis 
  • Preparation of monthly billing for commercial and permanent tenants 
  • Preparation of monthly financial statements 
  • Preparation of monthly recurring and nonrecurring adjustments and journal entries 
  • Daily banking and related recording of activity 
  • Processing of accounts payable and cash disbursements periodically during the month 
  • Processing of weekly payroll and related withholding payments 
  • Performance of cash management procedures 
  • Processing of various union reports on a monthly basis 
  • Monthly bank reconciliations and credit card analysis 
  • Preparation of various analyses utilized in the month end closing process 
  • Provision of assistance as it relates to the preparation of periodic STX, HTX, CRQ, UXS and CT-186 tax return filings 
  • Reconciliation of quarterly and year-end payroll reports to the financial statements 
  • Preparation of Forms 1099-MISC 
  • Preparation of the annual projection (budget) for the companies 
  • Monthly physical count of the bar department inventory and analysis of significant variances 
  • Preparation of various analyses utilized as it relates to outside audits, covering general liability insurance, worker’s compensation insurance, union payroll, STX and HTX 
  • Monitoring of all accounts receivable and collection of such 
  • Installation of new computer applications and related conversions as it relates to applications used by the accounting department 
  • Monitoring and obtainment of tax-exempt certificates from guests 
  • Evaluate, monitor, and implement internal controls and segregation of duties, as applicable  
  • Identification and provision of assistance as it relates to profitability improvement  
  • Preparation of financial analyses or reports for use by other departments, owners, etc. on an as requested basis

Job Requirements

  • Strong accounting skills required 
  • Bachelor or higher college degree in accounting required 
  • At least 3-5 years of experience as assistant controller 
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and concepts 
  • Strong knowledge of payroll processing and management 
  • Proficient understanding of basic computer programs; i.e. Windows, Word, Excel and preferably familiar with Tenant Pro, M3 and HMS programs 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and fluent in English 
  • Strong problem-solving skills 
  • Should be self-directed and have the ability to work well with, supervise and train others 
  • Must possess the ability to multi-task, work well under pressure, meet deadlines, supervise, and train a staff, and adjust effectively to change
