Job Description

Aparium Hotel Group is looking a Director of Rooms for the soon to be open Foundation Hotel. The Foundation Hotel is scheduled to open this Spring 2017.

Do you want to be part of the exciting revitalization of Detroit? The Foundation Hotel is at the forefront of the renewal of the Motor City. A transformation of the former Detroit Fire Department Headquarters and adjacent Pontchartrain Wine Cellar building, This 100 room hotel will be the top hotel in the market with authentic inspiration, design, and programming that respects Detroit’s past, yet is looking forward through its revival.

The food and beverage programming will include a three-meal restaurant and bar with approximately 200 covers positioned to be among the top restaurants in the region. The hotel’s restaurant will present iconic New American cuisine, and with space that will serve as an incubator for culinary students, up and coming chefs and visiting culinary influencers. The elevated bar program will focus on collaboration with Michigan breweries and distillers. 

The hotel will feature approximately 4500 square feet of meeting space, including a rooftop ballroom and a unique podcast studio.

As a member of the pre-opening team, you will be part of a hotel unlike anything else in the area. The Director of Rooms will start 12 weeks prior to the hotel opening.

Job Requirements

Job Requirements:

  • Manages the associates of the Housekeeping Department and Front Office Department. Interviews, trains and schedules associates. Conducts Performance Evaluations and disciplines associates when needed.
  • Facilitates and encourages cross training amongst departments
  • Ensures seamless guest experience by fostering cooperation between departments
  • Maintains all guest experience tools and communication including oversight of guest comment cards, on-line reviews and responses (TripAdvisor, Revinate, etc.). May train staff to manage these daily functions
  • Trains associates to gather guest preferences, create tracking system and maintain information
  • Handles confidential situations in a professional manner
  • Understands guest service needs and exceeds their expectations
  • Handles all guest interactions with the highest level of hospitality and professionalism, accommodating special requests whenever possible; resolves customer complaints, assists customers in all inquiries in connection with hotel services, hours of operations, key hotel personnel, in house events, directions, etc. Responds to all guests’ requests in an accurate and timely manner making recommendations based on local knowledge and hotel practices
  • Processes packages, faxes, messages and mail which may be either outgoing or incoming in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Handles guest check-ins/check-outs in accordance with hotel credit/cash handling policies in an efficient and friendly manner
  • Pre-registers and blocks reservations and takes same day reservations and when necessary future reservations following hotel rate structures, discounts and sell strategies
  • Cancels room reservations according to hotel procedures
  • Walks customers in a professional and courteous manner according to procedures
  • Stores and retrieves guest luggage and packages
  • Provides basic trouble shooting support for in-room services such as Internet, TV movies, games and Web services
  • Establishes detailed cleaning and preventive maintenance programs to ensure appearance and life of all furniture, fixtures and equipment. Sets and maintains high standards of cleanliness. Assigns associates to complete the needed activities for the day. Monitors associate activities to assure that standards are being met, associates are being supported and guest needs are being met. Inspects all areas of responsibilities daily. Works directly with outside contracted companies to assure quality and timeliness of work
  • Resolves customer complaints, handling all guest interactions with the highest level of hospitality and professionalism, accommodating special requests whenever possible. Responds to all guest requests in an accurate and timely manner
  • Assures financial goals of the department are being met. Monitors and controls labor expenses and other divisional expenses such as Uniforms, Linen, Guest Supplies, Cleaning Supplies and Contract Services. Establishes and maintains accurate inventory records. Participates in periodic Linen, Uniform and Supplies Inventories. Recommends appropriate actions passed on results of inventory. Assures that equipment is properly maintained
  • Prepares annual budget for labor and operating expense. Proposes items to be included in annual Capital Plan
  • Assures effective operation of the Laundry/Valet
  • Takes action in all matters related to the safety, security, satisfaction and well-being of hotel guests and associates. Responds swiftly and effectively in any hotel emergency of safety situations

  • Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry, associates may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the hotel

Educational Requirements:

  • A 4 year college degree with an emphasis in Hospitality Management preferred
  • A minimum of 3 years customer service management experience
  • Must be proficient in Word, Excel and other applicable computer systems

Work Environment:

  • Standard hotel setting. Professional, passionate and positive work environment.
  • Continuous standing 100% of the shift
  • Inside 98% of the shift
  • Lifting/pushing/pulling/carrying required up to 350lbs. Carts may be pulled up to length of a full city block
  • Bending/Kneeling required 25% of the shift
  • Mobile position requiring 100% of the time
