10 hot hospitality job markets for 2017
As hotel building ramps up across the country, some areas stand out for the opportunities they present to job seekers. These cities are expecting many new hotel developments and expansions, which should mean more job openings, too.
New York City, New York
New York City welcomed a record 58.3 million visitors in 2015, and by 2021 its tourism marketing agency hopes to increase that number to 67 million visitors per year. New hotels are entering the market to accommodate all those visitors; recent openings include Hilton Brooklyn New York, Four Seasons Downtown, The Beekman, and The Redbury. In February, 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge is expected to open with 194 rooms. Hotel restaurants are enjoying a resurgence in this city, so hotels are attracting both travelers and local guests for dining.
Los Angeles, California
As of August 2016, 37 new hotels were under construction in Los Angeles County, adding up to 6,772 rooms. Hollywood in particular is seeing a flurry of hotel building. Upcoming developments there include Thompson Hollywood Hotel with 220 rooms, a 55-room hotel at 1525 Cahuenga, and an 80-room hotel at 5600 Hollywood.
Demand for new hotel rooms in Chicago is leading developers to turn the city’s historic buildings into hotels. Examples of hotels that have recently opened in existing buildings include LondonHouse, The Gray Hotel, The Hollander, and The Robey. And the 287-room Conrad Chicago opened this November near Magnificent Mile; it features three restaurants and a sky lobby.
Rising oil prices suggest upcoming growth for Houston’s economy, which is dominated by the energy sector. New hotels are opening in anticipation. Aloft Houston Downtown, Residence Inn by Marriott, and Courtyard by Marriott are some of the new offerings. In the works are the Marriott Marquis, which is slated to have 1,000 rooms, and a hotel in Springwoods Village CityPlace.
Visitors come to Austin on business thanks to the city’s technology sector and to experience its cultural attractions. They also come for conventions. In 2017, the Fairmont Austin is expected to open with 1,066 rooms, which will make it the largest hotel in the city. It will be connected to the Austin Convention Center by an aerial walkway.
Napa Valley’s flourishing tourism industry has led to a shortage of workers, and job openings should increase as new hotels enter the market. New properties are expected to add approximately 800 hotel rooms in the next few years. One development that’s nearing completion is Archer Napa. Construction on the 183-room Archer Napa is currently 60 percent complete, and the hotel is expected to open later in 2017.
Las Vegas, Nevada
Las Vegas welcomed more than 42 million visitors in 2015, a record for the resort city, and the hotel market is responding to that strong demand. The Lucky Dragon Hotel & Casino and W Las Vegas Hotel are two hotels that recently opened. In the works are a Hilton Garden Inn with 169 rooms, Homewood Suites with 157 rooms, TownePlace Suites with 113 rooms, and Home2 Suites with 135 rooms.
Orlando is another city that saw a record number of visitors in 2015; 66 million people came to enjoy Orlando’s theme parks and other attractions. Upcoming developments include a convention hotel with 1,200 rooms and the 600-room Aventura.
Syracuse, New York
Syracuse is a smaller city that has seen significant hotel development. Syracuse added 700 hotel rooms over the past year with the opening of Marriott Downtown Syracuse, Homewood Suites, Aloft, and other properties. The Embassy Suites at Destiny USA is in the works and will offer another 209 rooms.
Asheville, North Carolina
Visitors flock to Asheville’s music scene, and the city is expanding its hotel offerings in response. Planned developments include The Parisian, which will have 62 rooms, an Embassy Suites Hotel with 180 rooms, and The Element Hotel with 100 rooms.
