Private Chef Job Description

A private chef may work for a single private employer or a number of private employers, depending on what opportunities are available in the job market at the time and what one’s personal preferences are. There is also quite a bit of variety from job to job in the work environment for a personal chef. A private chef, whose job title and duties is interchangeable with that of a personal chef, may perform their work in a large residential home, on a yacht, or even on their employer’s private plane. A private chef may also perform the majority of his or her work independently; or they may work closely with a butler housekeeper to ensure that their employer’s domestic operations run smoothly. Sometimes a private chef will also work as part of a small team for this same reason.

Job Description

Although once reserved for only the wealthiest of households, it is becoming increasingly common to find private chefs being employed in households of more modest means due to the diversification of the role itself.

In earlier times, the majority of private chefs worked for a single family as a live-in employee. Although these types of employment opportunities still exist for private chefs, most private chefs today work for a number of different employers. The most popular service currently being offered by the typical private chef, actually, is to visit a household about twice a month in order to prepare a large number of meals that the customer then reheats at their convenience.

Wherever and however they work, private chefs must develop a keen awareness of their employers’ needs, as well as their particular likes and dislikes as far as food is concerned. This would include paying attention to such things about an employer’s intolerances for specific ingredients and other special dietary requirements, as well as what their favorite meals are and which ones they are not particularly fond of. Because most people have highly developed preferences for what they like to eat, as well as strong feelings about what they do not like to eat, and special dietary requirements are not uncommon as well, many private chefs specialize in a particular type of cooking such a vegetarian or low-calorie.

As the majority of personal chefs perform their cooking duties independently and as such are solely responsible for the dishes they prepare, a chef must already be fully trained and experienced in all aspects of his professional prior to taking a job as a personal chef.

Duties and Responsibilities

A private chef is responsible for preparing and cooking meals for their employer(s). All duties associated with this responsibility are more often than not assumed solely by the personal chef, although in rare cases a personal chef may manage a small team that they are able to delegate some of these tasks to. Some personal chefs are also called upon to organize special events such as dinner parties and birthday celebrations.

Although it is important for a personal chef to present their meals well, it is equally if not more important, for him or her to always leave their employer’s kitchen in a clean and tidy condition. A personal chef must also take care to meet other high standards of health and hygiene, such as storing food properly.

Salary

Although the pay rate for personal chefs varies greatly form employer to employer and is also influenced by the type of arrangement one has with an employer the average total earnings for this type of job fall in the range of $30,000 to $40,000 per year for both live-in and live-out positions. However, it is not unknown for an experienced private chef to earn in excess of $60,000 per year. Private chefs who only cook for an employer a few times of month typically charge between $14 and $20 per meal per person.
