The majority of employees do not respect their managers and would fire them if they were put in charge, reveals Hcareers.com, the dominant online job site for the restaurant and hospitality industry.
Hcareers.com researched more than 2,000 employees around the world in the restaurant and hospitality industries¹. US bosses fared the best with half of employees stating that they would give their boss the pink slip, Canada followed with 54% of staff. British bosses were deemed the worst with a staggering two-thirds of workers stating they would give their head honcho the 'heave ho'.
Hcareers.com undertook the research to obtain employees' perspectives on what qualities they look for in management. Feedback suggests that lack of respect for senior team members is one of the key reasons that restaurant employees leave their jobs.
"While this research seems negative for managers, it provides valuable insight on what qualities employees are looking for in their bosses," said David Curry, CEO and president at Hcareers.com. "Overwhelming, employees want their managers to 'walk the talk' - it's a case of actions speak louder than words. Management needs to do as they say if they want to retain quality staff."
The restaurant industry is currently a hot bed of employment. Restaurant industry sales are projected to reach a record $426.1 billion in 2003, up 4.5% from 2002. On a typical day in 2003, the restaurant industry will post average sales of nearly $1.2 billion2.
