World-class Hotel and Tourism School n recent years, Asia has emerged as the new centre of excellence for the world’s hospitality and tourism industry. China is also attracting particular attention and is destined to become the world’s No. 1 tourist destination by 2020. Based in Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) is uniquely positioned to take advantage of developments in the industry, and to provide the region with a new generation of outstanding professional talent. As a global centre of excellence in hospitality and tourism education and research, SHTM serves the industry and academic communities through the advancement of education and dissemination of knowledge. In 2005, the School was ranked No.1 among Asian institutions of its kind and No. 4 in world-ranking based on research and scholarship, according to a study published in the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research.
The School’s major strength is its international scope. Our world-class faculty members of 60 are drawn from 18 countries around the world, and the majority of them possess hospitality or tourism industry managerial experience. They teach programmes in Hotel Management and Tourism Management leading up to Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Hotel and Tourism Management, Master of Philosophy, Master of Science, Bachelor of Science and Higher Diploma.
The School provides a unique environment in which the students can pursue their learning. The only one of its kind in Asia, the Che-woo Lui Hotel and Tourism Resource Centre is a unit designed to support the research, teaching and learning functions of the School. The Millennium Training Restaurant provides a real restaurant setting for students to learn, study, experiment and experience the food and beverage products as well as to practise service skills. The Samsung Digital Lab for Hospitality Technology features state-of-the-art computer facilities for studying IT and preparing project work.
As the School continues to lead Asia and moves further up the global rankings, we look to the future and more growth. Scheduled to be completed in 2010, the planned teaching hotel complex will feature state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities and 278 guest rooms. A fully operational hotel, the facility will offer students the opportunity to work, learn and conduct research in a sophisticated setting. The hotel will not only be a landmark in the area, but also a beacon for hospitality and tourism education in Asia and the world.
