Job Objectives

The Tourism Executive Director shall develop and implement strategies to increase awareness of the culture, history, heritage, attractions, venues and special events to enhance the visibility of Nash County/ Rocky Mount area, resulting in increased tourism and visitation.  He/she shall carry out their jobs in a professional manner and shall work whatever hours are necessary to "get the job done" during critical times.  This position is very important for the success of the Nash County Travel & Tourism’s programs. It requires a person who is a self-starter, has organizational ability, willing to take responsibility, can motivate volunteers and work well with the public.

General Responsibilities

  • Work to ensure a high awareness of Nash County/Rocky Mount Area as a significant local and state destination, thereby increasing visitor attendance as well as an event venue.
  • Provide input for administrative cost, marketing plan and budget for fiscal year.
  • Maintain healthy fiscal year administrative cost, marketing plan and budget.
  • Provide front-line customer service in person and/or by telephone answering questions and referring customers/tourists to an appropriate venue.
  • Work with committee chairs to assist in meeting goals.
  • Attend and staff special events.
  • Provide primary staff support to the Tourism Council and any committees.
  • Provide primary staff coordination of the tourism websites and eMarketing Program.
  • Develop methods for promoting Nash County/Rocky Mount Area to group travelers and to local groups including sports tournaments, reunions and other special interest groups.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with event and activity organizers to help promote their events.
  • Maintain and oversee the compilation of tourism data and statistical information that may be helpful in designing a marketing strategy.
  • Remain alert to current tourism/travel trends.  Gather data and techniques used by other regional and national organizations to promote their cities.
  • Develop a program to educate the citizens of Nash County/Rocky Mount Area about tourism and what it means to this area.

Qualifications

Degree in business-related field and two years tourism experience preferred; considerable knowledge of personal computers and PC hardware such as printers, scanners, etc.; ability to present ideas and programs in a persuasive manner, both orally and written; ability to deal effectively with the general public including individuals from a wide range of social and economic backgrounds; ability to speak effectively to groups/organizations having an interest in the visitor industry; ability to exercise considerable discretion and independent judgment; ability to follow through with projects, work with minimal supervision, and judge priority of goals and assignments; ability to deal effectively with work situations which demand unusual hours; travel to various tourism tradeshows and work projects demanding time deadlines.
