The Director of Sales & Marketing develops, implements, facilitates and supervises the sales and marketing activities and operations for the facility by performing the following duties, personally or through subordinates.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Including but not limited to the following..)

  • Functions as the senior sales manager in charge of all sales and marketing activities and personnel involved in sales and marketing for the facility.
  • Manages and leads the day-to-day operations of the Sales & Marketing department, including direct sales, advertising, public relations and related tasks, while maintaining focus on the facility’s overall strategic goals.
  • Serves as a member of the facility’s executive team.
  • Seeks out and targets new business, initiates action plan to approach and secure new business for the facility. Generates short term and long term sales, books and schedules events.
  • Develops and updates the facility’s strategic sales & marketing plan.
  • Directs department to achieve established revenue and room night objectives.
  • Works collectively with area CVB or like entities (SCTB, EASC, SCVB, SCLA, LMC, etc…) and hotels to seek and secure events that result in significant revenue for the facility, room nights for the hotels, and positive economic impact for the general community.
  • Establishes performance goals for all sales managers, and monitors performance on a continual basis.
  • Select, train, motivate, supervise and evaluate all sales and marketing personnel.
  • Conducts tours of the facility for potential event organizers; answers questions and provides information regarding facility capabilities.
  • Develops event license agreements.
  • Participates in the development and administration of the facility’s annual budget; forecasts event activity and projects event revenues; forecasts funds needed for sales & marketing activities.
  • In accordance with the strategic sales & marketing plan, coordinates and oversees the development, scheduling and placement of all facility advertising and marketing materials
  • Analyzes facility rates (rent, catering, equipment, services, labor, etc…) in relation to the competitive set and recommend modifications as necessary.
  • Prepares sales and revenue reports (i.e. booking pace, weekly sales reports, booking status, lost business, etc…) for general manager on a regular basis.
  • Analyze sales statistics to determine business growth potential.
  • Represents the facility at industry-related conferences and trade shows.
  • Provides highly responsible staff assistance to the general manager.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.

 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises sales managers. Coordinates marketing support with the Administrative Assistant. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with SMG's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding; disciplining employees in conjunction with Human Resources; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited 4-year college or university in Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations or related field preferred

  • Minimum 3-5 years sales related experience in a convention center, hotel, or related property required
  • 2-3 years sales supervisory experience necessary
  • Additional experience may be substituted for education
  • Facility/industry experience preferred

 

Skills and Abilities:

Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills required

  • Ability to effectively supervise staff
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects
  • High aptitude for critical and strategic thinking and analysis
  • High aptitude for figures and advanced writing skills
  • Professional presentation, appearance and work ethic

 

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have general knowledge of computers including Microsoft Office or equivalent applications (Word, Excel, Power Point);

  • Ability to use or learn various event booking and management software programs

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

No certifications are required

  • CMP preferred

 

Other Qualifications:

Ability to travel extensively via air and auto required

  • Ability to work irregular hours in addition to normal business hours
  • Proven and verifiable track record of sales success
