Seeking a Chief Engineer to maintain the entire hotel facility, including the physical building structure, all mechanical, electrical and HVAC systems and related equipment in accordance with energy conservation and preventative maintenance programs.  This individual will be responsible for the upkeep of guest and employee areas to maintain a safe and attractive hotel environment.

Job Description:

  • Conduct walk-throughs and visually assess the safety, efficiency, maintenance and operation of the physical plant including all mechanical, electrical, HVAC systems and other related equipment.
  • Understand and monitor technical data regarding the hotel equipment and systems.
  • Conduct or supervise routine and necessary maintenance on the guest rooms, public spaces, meeting rooms, food and beverage facilities, back-of-the-house areas and grounds.  Complete or oversee completion of all project work and repairs including repairs, replacement and renovation projects to employee offices and work areas.
  • Develop and follow a comprehensive preventative maintenance plan for the hotel.
  • Promptly respond to guest complaints regarding hotel maintenance issues.
  • Assist in hiring, training and supervising department staff and outside contractors under the direction of the Facilities Maintenance Department.
  • Adhere to all hotel/corporate purchasing policies and procedures, including but not limited to obtaining and reviewing outside contractor/vendor bids and preparing budgets and purchase orders. Ensure operating supplies and other items are sourced, bid and purchased within brand and budget guidelines on a timely basis.
  • Operate the department in a manner consistent with the operating budget.
  • Maintain an efficient system of communication between the Facilities Maintenance and other hotel departments.
  • Maintain records of power water and fuel consumption.
  • Maintain effective Energy Management and program and conduct special training for other operating departments on the efficient use of energy in the hotel.
  • Follow prescribed safety procedures for personnel and equipment by the company and OSHA.
  • Actively train hotel employees in fire prevention, environmental health and safety and on the proper and safe use of hotel equipment and systems.  Attend training meetings and meeting regarding hotel operations as needed.
  • Oversee water treatment programs.
  • Inform the General Manager on a regular basis about the specific and overall condition of the building structure, related systems and equipment offering prudent, cost effective proposals for maintaining or repairing these systems.  Prepare computer generated reports as necessary.
  • Maintain an organized and safe work environment.

Job Requirements:

The individual must possess the following education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job:

  • High school or equivalent education.  Bachelor’s Degree or related technical school degree preferred.
  • Five to seven years of maintenance experience in a major hotel, hospital, office or other building, including three or more years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Ability to obtain and/or maintain any government required licenses, certificates or permits.
  • Ability to speak, read, write and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to act as a team leader and work with minimal direct supervision.
  • Math skills and basic computational ability.  
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of:
  • mechanical equipment such as chillers, boilers, water softeners and refrigeration equipment
  • plumbing and electrical systems
  • Familiarity with (or ability to become familiar with) local city codes and other applicable building codes and laws.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints
  • Experience in office procedures, ordering materials and securing and evaluating bids
  • Flexibility to work varying schedules based on business levels or during emergency situations including any shifts, weekends and holidays as necessary.
