People from a variety of educational and experiential backgrounds fill event jobs. While many employers prefer to hire staff with bachelor's degrees in marketing, public relations, communications, business, hotel management or hospitality management, others will select applicants with different backgrounds and allow them to learn the skills they'll need on the job. Many enter the industry after planning events or coordinating meetings while working in other positions. Others work in hotel sales or as marketing or catering assistants or coordinators before taking on their first meeting and event planning jobs.

Depending on your personality, you may find event, conference and meeting jobs to be stressful or exhilarating. The majority of roles in this industry are fast-paced and often demanding. While many hours are spent in traditional office settings, event and conference coordinators may also work on-site. Travel is also often a requirement of meeting and convention planning jobs.
